Low level laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment modality that involves the application of an emitter that delivers the laser to specific treatment areas. Cold laser is different from surgical lasers. It is gentle, does not interrupt the skin, and does not cause any discomfort.
The Multi Radiance Medical MR4 Laser has a built in target and dose technology that allows the practitioner to quickly identify the treatment area and deliver the appropriate dose. The MR4 is the world’s first and only FDA-cleared device combining electrical stimulation and laser in a single probe.
Yes. Laser therapy has been in use since the 1970’s within minimal reported side effects. Occasionally people with chronic injuries may feel increased aggravated several days following treatment due to the increased activity of the body’s immune and healing response.
Treatment plans are based on the presenting condition. Many people experiencing pain and inflammation from arthritis find that 1x/week treatments are able to adequately moderate their pain. Someone who is experiencing an acute injury (muscle strain/tear, ligamentous sprain) benefit from treatments that are closer together during the initial healing (2-3 times a week). Someone who has been suffering from chronic pain (longer than 3 months) may be able to tolerate 1-2 treatments per week depending on how their system responds to the increased metabolic response in the area.
Some people find relief after the first treatment and the practitioner will work with you to determine an appropriate schedule of treatment to maintain. Most people find relief after 3-4 treatments as the effects are cumulative. If no change is seen after 5-6 treatments a discussion with your practitioner will be needed to determine a change in your treatment plan.
Laser application is always combined with an assessment from our physiotherapist to determine your current function and to develop a home program to supplement the laser therapy.
